Budget 2018: Arun Jaitley breaks tradition, delivers bilingual speech
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday departed from the tradition to deliver a bilingual Union Budget speech. Jaitley addressed the Parliament in English and Hindi. Finance Ministers have, in the past, delivered Union Budget speeches in English language.
Speaking in Hindi is being seen as a move to connect with connect with India's rural masses. It may also help the Narendra Modi government establish the fact that the Budget is for the 'aam aadmi', especially the farmers who are in distress. Agriculture sector is one of the key sectors being tracked in the Budget speech.
One of the FM Jaitley's initial statements in Hindi, as part of the Budget speech was, "Desh mein krishi utpadan record star par hai, 2022 tak kisaano ki aay dugni karenge (Agricultural output in the country is at an all-time high. Farmer income will double by 2022)."
